We had the idea for a new social dining house / restaurant whilst cooking on a trip to France, eating the best local produce that the regional markets had to offer. We decided to showcase the best dishes from across the Mediterranean, but couldn’t limit ourselves to that - there is so much more we want to bring to the table.
Origin is about a sense of place
So, Origin is about a sense of place, about provenance, quality, authenticity and also sometimes simplicity – the best charcuterie or cheese needs nothing but a glass of good wine.
We’re not restricted by any one country or genre’s food, but source the best ingredients available, firstly in Yorkshire where we’re blessed with outstanding seafood, livestock, fruit and vegatables, championing local producers and suppliers, and supplement it with the finest examples of sustainably sourced ingredients from across the globe.
If the best Machego comes from La Mancha, then that’s what we’ll source, but if someone starts producing a great alternative in Thirsk, or Hawes then we’ll be all over it.
Our aim is to offer small plates of great quality food, but in a relaxed, social environment. Food is for sharing so maybe try 2 or 3 dishes each and try each others. You don’t have to share of course. In fact you don’t even have to eat as we have a large comfortable bar downstairs to unwind or chill out in, with plenty of local craft beers and ciders as well as international favourites to help you relax.
Our general manager Josh cut his teeth in gastro pubs before moving on to 5 star Grantley Hall, so you’re in good hands with both Josh and his team, who also make some seriously good cocktails!
Our highly skilled team of chefs led by Toby, have a vast amount of experience between them, across many different styles of cooking.
Toby has worked for a top Spanish restaurant, has invaluable experience of Japanese cuisine plus a grounding in both modern and traditional British cuisine. He is also passionate about middle eastern dishes as well as far eastern, and you’ll see that there are a number of fusion dishes on our menu.
Both Adrian and Toby are also excited by Korean food and charcoal BBQ’s hence why we have one in our brand new kitchen – they love their new toy!
